Daunomycin medication is used to treat a certain type of cancer (Kaposi’s sarcoma). Daunorubicin belongs to the group of antineoplastic (cancer-fighting medicines) known as anthracyclines. This medication works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells. This medicine is given as an infusion into your vein. Close monitoring of kidney function and the blood cell count is required while receiving this medication. If you experience any symptoms while receiving this medicine, inform your doctor immediately.
Description
Daunorubicin forms complexes with DNA by intercalation between base pairs. It inhibits the topoisomerase II activity by stabilizing the DNA topoisomerase II complex, preventing the religation portion of the ligation-relegation reaction that topoisomerase II catalyzes.
Daunorubicin also inhibits polymerase activity, affects the regulation of gene expression, and produces free radical damage to DNA.
