Overview

Perfecine (Pirfenidone) medication is used to treat a specific lung disease known as Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Perfecine medication is available in the form of tablets and it belongs to a group of drugs called antifibrotics (prevents tissue scarring). This tablet works by decreasing the scarring and swelling in the lungs and it helps in improving oxygenation and breathing comfort in patients. Before starting treatment, inform your health professional if you have a pre-existing history of heart, liver, and kidney disease.

Pharmacodynamics

Pirfenidone is the best agent with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antifibrotic properties. Pirfenidone is also known as an active synthetic antifibrotic agent similar to pyridine 2,4-dicarboxylate. This drug blocks the growth factors like - fibroblast, epidermal, platelet-derived, and transforming beta-1, and slow down the spread of tumor cell. Pirfenidone also inhibits DNA synthesis and the production of mRNA for collagen types I and III, resulting in a reduction in radiation-influenced fibrosis.
